Today my American friend Emily and I went to the American Embassy during our lunch break. It's surrounded by a gray fence and has a big gatehouse in front with metal detectors. We went in to the gatehouse and the security guard asked if he could help up.
"We want to go in the embassy because we're Americans," I say.
"Sorry, no one can go in," the Kiwi guard replies.
"Not even Americans?" Emily asks.
"Nope just people who work there."
"Oh. OK. Well, aren't we supposed to register that we live here or something?" I ask.
"I don't know - but it would have to be in Auckland."
"OK, so can people go in that one?"
"I don't know, but I can give you a paper with the website and the address up there," the guard says, trying to be helpful.
"Sure. Thanks." we say, accepting a slip of paper before walking through the gate and back to work.
I have to say I was pretty disappointed.

So, if you can't go in the American Embassy and register that you live there what happens if something happens and you need in?? Do they still not let you because you aren't registered?!
