birthday weekend

New Zealand's labour day is Monday, which also happens to be my birthday. I've been excited since last November (which is when I decided to move here) about having my birthday in the spring, especially since it's a holiday.
Amy and I had a big weekend planned. We were going to hike the Tongariro Crossing, which is supposedly the best one-day hike in the country. It's a 8ish-hour trek through an active volcanic field that goes up mountain and next to gorgeous lakes. It's in the mountains, so you can't hike it if the weather is bad.
So today, I checked the weather.
All of New Zealand has little gray rainclouds on it, except one little bitty town on the North Island far from Wellington.
So, apparently having your birthday in the middle is spring isn't so great after all.
