Learning to drive all over again

For those of you who don't know, my first experience driving a stick shift at age 15 didn't go so well. I ended up running over a baby tree at the local video store and having to pay for a new one to be planted.
Well, last night Emily, Amy and I decided to go to the video store after dinner. Emily thought I should drive because her car is kind of old and not worth much, and she thought it would be entertaining to see me try to drive a stick shift on the wrong side of the road.
Now, here's the thing, not only is the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car, but so are the blinkers and windshield wipers and the gearshift. Luckily, the clutch and the break and gas pedals are in the right place.
Oh, and I did I mention how hilly Wellington is?
So we left the house (later Sarah said she could hear the engine revving from the backroom) and drove up the hill. As a car approached, Amy and Emily both yelled, "Left! Left!" I eventually made sense of what they were screeching and corrected myself, but not before we were all laughing uncontrollably to the point of hyperventilation.
Every time I tried to turn my blinker on, I turned the windshield wipers on instead, and once I got the right lever, I turned them on to go the wrong direction because directions also are opposite apparently.
I had a bit of trouble at the stop light while trying to figure out which lane was the right-hand turn lane. And turning left while remembering to yield to the driver turning right was troublesome, but we made it to Blockbuster all in one piece, and no trees died as a result of our adventure, so I think it was a success.

I have bookmarked your blog. You are being monitered.

What movie did you rent, by the way? I enjoyed Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang, but you and Amy might prefer Tsotsi, the most recent recipient of Best Foreign Language Film.

Hang loose, or whatever they say down there.
